{"id":826,"date":"2008-10-09T23:13:19","date_gmt":"2008-10-10T06:13:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mlmlblog.wordpress.com\/?p=826"},"modified":"2008-10-09T23:13:19","modified_gmt":"2008-10-10T06:13:19","slug":"no-way-out-the-infinite-hypothesis-loop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/student-life\/2008\/10\/09\/no-way-out-the-infinite-hypothesis-loop\/","title":{"rendered":"No Way Out &#8211; the Infinite Hypothesis Loop"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_206\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-206\" style=\"width: 72px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/student-life\/students\/erin-loury\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-206\" title=\"Erin Loury\" src=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/student-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2008\/08\/erin-with-fish12.jpg?w=72\" alt=\"Erin Loury\" width=\"72\" height=\"96\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-206\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Erin Loury<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>by <a href=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/student-life\/students\/erin-loury\/\">Erin Loury<\/a>, Ichthyology Lab<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not unusual to feel &#8220;locked-in&#8221; at times during graduate school (as in, &#8220;What is this path I&#8217;ve committed myself to\u00a0 and where does it end?!&#8221;).\u00a0 But, according to the dry wit of one British ecologist, this is a natural product of the scientific method itself&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>While doing a bit of class reading (can you tell midterms are around the corner?) from the book <em>Experiments in Ecology<\/em> by AJ Underwood (1997) I came across this little gem of a quote.\u00a0 Underwood stresses that the acceptance or a rejection of a hypothesis at the end of an experiment is hardly the end (as he subtly suggests in his figure: DON&#8217;T END HERE).\u00a0 More work remains to either create a new hypothesis or develop tests to refine the existing one.\u00a0 He concludes, <em>&#8220;Thus, in Figure 2.1 there is no way out of the procedure once you have started it, until you die or change research fields.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<dl class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/student-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2008\/10\/picture-5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-831\" title=\"picture-5\" src=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/student-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2008\/10\/picture-5.png?w=277\" alt=\"the endless hyptohesis loop\" width=\"296\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/student-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2008\/10\/picture-5.png 520w, https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/student-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2008\/10\/picture-5-277x300.png 277w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 296px) 100vw, 296px\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\">Click to see larger image: that endless hypothesis loop<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>That&#8217;s right. Until you die.\u00a0 Or change research fields&#8230; For some, the never ending flow of questions is the beauty of the system, or exactly the point.\u00a0 As Underwood continues, &#8220;This is comforting in terms of eventual longevity of employment&#8221;\u00a0 (assuming, of course, one can obtain funding\u00a0 to continue the process, but that&#8217;s another matter&#8230;).<\/p>\n<p>For others, this smacks strongly of commitment, and has them edging towards the door.\u00a0 Grad school is the ultimate test-drive of a scientist&#8217;s life.\u00a0 Can you you see yourself pursuing this continuous loop and loving it?\u00a0 Do you have that insatiable curiosity to understand how the world works, to keep asking questions, to think of possible answers and find creative ways to test them? (and test them and test them and test them?)
