\u00a0We started off the day in life jackets, learning how to put them on in the water and even manipulate them while blindfolded. \u00a0We \u00a0learned safety swimming patterns to make ourselves larger targets for rescue, to support injured companions, and to defend ourselves from curious or hungry marine life. \u00a0In an emergency one might not have the chance to even put on a life jacket, so we also practiced making life preservers out of our pants. \u00a0(This is by far my favorite new party trick.)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6931\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6931\" style=\"width: 521px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/student-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2013\/03\/pic1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6931\" src=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/student-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2013\/03\/pic1.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Helicopter crash training\" width=\"521\" height=\"391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/student-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2013\/03\/pic1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/student-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2013\/03\/pic1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 521px) 100vw, 521px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6931\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Helicopter crash training<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After we practiced climbing abord life rafts and familiarizing ourselves with their layout and supplies, we began learning some techniques for surviving a helicopter crash over water. \u00a0The metal frame in the above picture has seat belts, just like in an airplane. \u00a0Our job was to strap ourselves into this 'helicopter', get turned upside down underwater, and then calmly un-buckle ourselves and swim out of a designated exit. \u00a0We did this blindfolded, with skeleton doors and windows attached to the metal frame, and even with a small, handheld tank of air that would extend the amount of time we could remain in the 'helicopter' before surfacing. \u00a0These tasks may seem\u00a0strait-forward, \u00a0but even in a training simulation where there was no real fear of injury I found it difficult to think clearly while\u00a0upside-down, cold, and underwater. \u00a0It's a good thing I've had the chance to practice!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6939\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6939\" style=\"width: 584px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/student-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2013\/03\/pic8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6939\" src=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/student-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2013\/03\/pic8.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"pic8\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/student-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2013\/03\/pic8.jpg 640w, https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/student-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2013\/03\/pic8-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6939\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Life jackets, life rafts, and getting flipped upside down!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We finished off the morning pool training by learning to swim through oil and burning chemicals on the water. \u00a0By this time we had been in the pool for about four hours, and we were COLD!
