Benoit-Bird<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8230;Our research cruise on the Gold Rush got off to a bumpy start.\u00a0 We were delayed in leaving Dutch Harbor after working to attach the acoustic equipment, rig up our nets, and wire our electronic devices into the ship\u2019s circuitry.\u00a0 All this had to be done before hitting the seas to gather any data, but it was tough to know that the clock was ticking.<\/p>\n<p>So, we were impatient when we heard that the ocean would be rough, and we decided to motor out anyway and get going on our course.\u00a0 As it turned out, we probably should have stayed in port, gone for beers and a hotel room, and waited for the water to calm down; We did not collect much usable data during that first 72 hours anyway!<\/p>\n<p>A good sign of our impending experience was the ship\u2019s barometer.\u00a0 Keep in mind that anything under 29.92 is considered, on average, a \u201clow\u201d pressure event, and is likely associated with stormy weather&#8230;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1719\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1719\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/student-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2009\/10\/p7203003-websized1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1719\" src=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/student-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2009\/10\/p7203003-websized1.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Photo: C. Waluk<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The waves and wind slammed us as soon as we rounded the last point of land and pushed into the open Bering Sea waters.\u00a0 The ship pitched and plunged, leaving us weightless, even as we braced and grabbed with our hands.\u00a0 Everything that was not bolted or strapped down began to slip, slide, and slam every which way.\u00a0 The Gold Rush turned into the storm, facing torrents of spray and heaving mountains of slate gray water.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1720\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1720\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/student-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2009\/10\/bigun_0001-websized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1720\" src=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/student-life\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/75\/2009\/10\/bigun_0001-websized.jpg\" alt=\"Photo: N.
