(photo by Shaara Ainsley)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>by <a href=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/student-life\/students\/erin-loury\/\">Erin Loury<\/a>, Ichthyology Lab<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a girl!\u00a0 It&#8217;s a boy!\u00a0 It&#8217;s 200 of each!<\/p>\n<p>The MLML aquarium room was asqueal with coos and baby talk last week &#8211; and that was just from the fawning grad students.\u00a0 The brooding efforts of a resident female octopus had paid off, and dozens of little eggs had become\u00a0 dozens of oh-so-squishable baby octopuses.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/student-life\/students\/shaara-ainsley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shaara Ainsley<\/a> snapped this shot of the photogenic little tykes when they were a few days old.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, the babies didn&#8217;t survive too much longer after their photo-op, despite valiant efforts by student Erin Jensen to get them to eat.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a marvel to think how something so seemingly vulnerable, drifting around in the plankton, stands a chance of ever becoming an adult in the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a rather low-quality video (sorry!) of the babies doing their bouncy thing (and Mom having none of it):<\/p>\n<p>[youtube=http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_LmXdGRzrqM]<\/p>\n<p>Now even if you don&#8217;t want to admit it, I know you&#8217;re dying to ask &#8211; where do baby octopuses come from?\u00a0 Well, you see, when two octopuses really&#8230; actually it&#8217;s probably better that you learn more about octopus dating and mating by checking out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.berkeley.edu\/news\/media\/releases\/2008\/03\/31_octo.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this awesome UC Berkeley research<\/a>, which includes work by Christine Huffard, now a post-doc at our neighbor, MBARI.<\/p>\n<p>And if that puts you in the mood for more off-the-wall octo shenanigans, check out this <a href=\"http:\/\/other95.blogspot.com\/2007\/10\/cephalopod-awareness-day-score-one-for.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">crazy video of an octopus taking down a shark<\/a> at The Other 95%, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pinktentacle.com\/2008\/07\/monster-octopi-with-scores-of-extra-tentacles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sideshow-worthy, 96-armed octopus<\/a> at The Pink Tentacle!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Erin Loury, Ichthyology Lab It&#8217;s a girl!\u00a0 It&#8217;s a boy!\u00a0 It&#8217;s 200 of each!
