For price, it's explained as if you\u2019re renting a room in a 3 bedroom. So, all of these price estimates will be higher if you\u2019re looking for a 2 bedroom or studio. Time estimates are from the lab (MLML):<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To the South: Marina (15 min), Seaside (15-20 min), Monterey (25 min) or Pacific Grove (25-30 min).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Marina and Seaside:\u00a0<\/b>(<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$1,000 - $1,600 per month)<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very residential, so there is not much to do around here, but rent is way cheaper.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a Walmart, Target, Grocery Outlet, and Costco nearby, as well as<\/span>\u00a0quite a few breweries and restaurants.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s close to a lot of hiking areas in the Ventana Wilderness and Los Padres National Forest.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CSUMB\u2019s campus is nearby and we can use their facilities including their library, pool, and gym.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If students want to go out, they usually go to Monterey (15-20 min drive).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is often more cloud cover from the fog that rolls in.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The drive to Moss is consistent, usually no traffic.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>CSUMB East Campus Apartments:<\/strong> ($2,000 - $3,000 per semester)\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CSUMB students only<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At East Campus, you can choose a family unit or rent a room in a student apartment. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Student apartments typically have two students to an apartment (each with their own bedroom and a shared bathroom) so you can pair up with another MLML student and apply or\u00a0be matched with a housemate. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you prefer to live alone, you are also eligible since you are a graduate student. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">East campus apartments can come unfinished\u00a0or furnished and can fluctuate in price <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They are usually ~$700\/room when apartments can be shared\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You can apply for East Campus housing at the beginning of each semester. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">More information on East Campus <a href=\"https:\/\/csumb.edu\/housing\/east-campus-apartments\">here<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Apply <a href=\"https:\/\/csumb.edu\/housing\/applying-east-campus\">here<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There's no much\u00a0going on around East Campus but you are close to CSUMB and right on theMST bus line. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There's also plenty of parking and it's a good option to have a decent amount of space at a reasonable price.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Military Housing at The Parks at Monterey:<\/strong> ($600-$700)\n<ul>\n<li>Available even if you are not a member of the military!<\/li>\n<li>The Parks at Monterey has many 2-4 bedroom\u00a0houses for rent with a variety of floor\u00a0plans. If you find a group of housemates, you can apply.<\/li>\n<li>You will need to do a background and credit check as part of the application process.<\/li>\n<li>More info <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksatmonterey.com\/home.asp?aid=28697\">here<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Monterey<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>:<\/strong> ($1,000-2,000 per month)<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slightly more expensive because it\u2019s a tourist center, so there are always lots of tourists, especially in the summer months.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Monterey has all the attractions of a vacation town (Monterey Bay Aquarium, with all it's regular events, Fisherman's Wharf, theaters, great diving, nice restaurants), but with a chilled-out friendly atmosphere.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a couple of streets with cool bars and fun places to eat, but the nightlife is better in Santa Cruz.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The weather is beautiful and consistently sunny. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is sometimes traffic, but it's irregular.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Pacific Grove:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ($1,000-2,000 per month)<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pacific Grove is near Carmel, which is where the fancy vacation homes are located.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Most students don\u2019t live down here due to the cost and added distance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll hit a little bit of morning traffic, maybe bumping your commute up 10 min from Monterey.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To the North: Watsonville (15 min), Capitola (30 min), Santa Cruz (35-45 min)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Watsonville\u00a0<\/b>(<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">probably ~$600-1,000)<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lots of farming, much like a lot of the area directly around Moss Landing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are some grocery stores including Grocery Outlet, fast food restaurants, shopping, and even a Target.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not much to do, but a shorter drive to both Santa Cruz and Moss Landing.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aptos\/Soquel<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>A beautiful, quiet town, spread among hills of gardens, orchards, and farms.<\/li>\n<li>Housing varies greatly, from apartments to houses back in the woods.<\/li>\n<li>Quiet community feel, very little traffic, although not a whole lot of things to do.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Capitola<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also a good area, so you could be between Moss Landing and the fun Santa Cruz area. Rent here is also cheaper than directly in SC itself.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Santa Cruz:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ($700-1,500 per month)\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally split between \u201cWest\u201d and \u201cEast\u201d SC split by the river.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Housing in all of SC is expensive; it\u2019s a big cause of concern. A lot of vacation homes means expensive houses\/land for the locals.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More nightlife; fun bars and dancing and <\/span><b>young people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cKeep Santa Cruz Weird\u201d kind of vibe. It's the Skate Board and Surf Ground-Zero, and there are lots of bikes, creativity, music, etc. You feel more culture around SC than in Monterey and definitely more than Seaside.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The morning commute can take around 25 to 35 minutes depending on where you live, and you are more likely to hit traffic. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To the East: <b>Salinas<\/b> (20 min)<\/p>\n<p>Center of the Bay: Moss Landing (no commute)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Moss Landing:\u00a0<\/b>(<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$1,000 per month)<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some students do live here\u2026 it\u2019s slow. Very little \u201cto do\u201d and you\u2019d have to go to Marina or Salinas for groceries.
