June joined the Ichthyology Lab in Fall 2015. Originally from the Washington, D.C. area, June is passionate for community ecology and exploring the dynamic interactions within California's kelp forests.
\n<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\n
For her thesis, June studies fish pee! Specifically, the nutrients that kelp forest fishes excrete when they pee. She seeks to discover:<\/span><\/div>\n
\n
    \n
  1. \u00a0Are certain species important nutrient contributors?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Are there certain \"hotspots\" to fish pee? Is fish pee more important in certain regions of California relative to other sources of nutrients?<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. How do human activities\u2014such as fishing and subsequent establishment of marine reserves\u2014affect nutrient cycles via fish pee?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n
    In addition to her thesis work, June has participated in numerous other research opportunities in the Monterey Bay area:<\/span><\/div>\n
    \n
      \n
    1. Research intern at the\u00a0NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries<\/a>\u00a0(with support from\u00a0CSU COAST<\/a>)<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. TA for Marine Ichthyology, Marine Ecology, and Environmental Studies of the Gulf of California<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. Deep sea video analyst in Rick Starr\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Fisheries and\u00a0Conservation Biology Lab<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n
    4. Research technician with the\u00a0CA Collaborative Fisheries Research Program<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      \n

      She is also engaged with numerous education and outreach projects:<\/span><\/p>\n

      1. \u00a0Volunteer SCUBA diver at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Reef Check California<\/span><\/li>\n
      2. Tour guide for visiting community members<\/span><\/li>\n
      3. Co-Chair for MLML's annual\u00a0Open House\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n
      4. Writer for the student-run\u00a0MLML blog<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n
      5. Western Society of Naturalists - Student Committee Chair<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
        Outside of MLML, June can usually be found playing music, SCUBA diving, and cuddling cats.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
