For some of these project I will be able to provide some support either in form of a stipend and\/or tuition.<\/p>\n<p>The following paragraphs describe potential\u00a0research topics; however, to learn \u00a0more about research opportunities feel free to contact me directly (<a href=\"mailto:iaiello@mlml.calstate.edu\">iaiello@mlml.calstate.edu<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Ivano<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bar-built estuaries: bar dynamics and wetland topography (in\u00a0collaboration with the CCWG)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>California\u2019s bar-built estuaries form where coastal\u00a0streams and rivers are\u00a0periodically closed off from exchanging waters with\u00a0the ocean by\u00a0the build up of a sand\u00a0berm at their mouth.\u00a0Changes in the timing of the berm buildup in relation to weather\u00a0and oceanography have significant effects on the extent and quality\u00a0of the estuarine habitats (e.g. lagoon, marshes). These habitats, which are essential for many marine and terrestrial species some of which are endangered, have been\u00a0heavily modified by humans as consequence of deforestation and use of wetland areas for agricultural and urban purposes.<\/p>\n<p>This project is a collaboration with the Central Coast Wetlands Group at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (http:\/\/ccwg.mlml.calstate.edu).<\/p>\n<p>Specific\u00a0research topics\u00a0include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Geomorphologic mapping\/modeling with terrestrial laser scanners\u00a0of marshes to establish inundation periodicity and vegetation community structure;<\/li>\n<li>Evaluation of bar formation dynamics using terrestrial laser scanning, beach camera analysis, and aerial photos<\/li>\n<li>Bar sediments analysis\u00a0with\u00a0laser particle sizing and provenance studies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Understanding the behavior of ice sheets and sea ice in the Bering Sea region\u00a0during the <em>40-K world (<\/em>in collaboration with Christina Ravelo, UCSC)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This project is based on sediment cores collected by deep-sea drilling in the Bering Sea during IODP Expedition 323 (http:\/\/iodp.tamu.edu\/scienceops\/expeditions\/bering_sea.html).<\/p>\n<p>The time interval chosen for this study (~1.7 to ~1.2 Ma) is right before the Mid-Pleistocene Transition when global ice volume varied mainly at periodicities of 40 kyrs. This time interval offers straightforward examples of how ice sheet mass balance is affected by seasonal solar forcing.<\/p>\n<p>Graduate theses will focus on\u00a0measuring fluxes and sources of IRD \u00a0(defined as &gt;250\u00b5m lithogenous particles) and differentiating\u00a0IRD derived from\u00a0ice berg calving from lithogenous material coming from\u00a0sea-ice. Goals are to better understand the role of sea ice in ice sheet growth\/decay, and to determine IRD provenance to\u00a0tie the IRD record to specific ice sheets.
