Both throughout his undergraduate career and after graduation, Ryan continued to work as a full-time crewman fishing for salmon in Bristol Bay and the Gulf of Alaska.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan completed his undergraduate studies at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.westmont.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Westmont College<\/a> in 2010 with a B.S. in Chemistry and a minor in Biology. After graduating, Ryan returned to Kodiak and was hired as a Biological Technician II for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afsc.noaa.gov\/kodiak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alaska Fisheries Science Center<\/a>\u00a0(NMFS). Here, he was responsible for maintaining water quality for ongoing ocean acidification experiments and assisting with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.afsc.noaa.gov\/Kodiak\/shellfish\/research.htm#enhancement\">studies<\/a>\u00a0involving juvenile <a href=\"http:\/\/seagrant.uaf.edu\/research\/projects\/initiatives\/king-crab\/general\/\">king and tanner crab<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan started his studies at MLML in 2012, and served as science crew and volunteer coordinator for the <a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.mlml.calstate.edu\/research\/ccfrp\/\">California Collaborative Fisheries Research Program (CCFRP)<\/a>.\u00a0Ryan helped to lead fieldwork for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.mlml.calstate.edu\/research\/rockfish-conservation-studies\/rcahistoricaldata\/\">Rockfish Conservation Area Project\u00a0<\/a>between 2012-2014--\u00a0a short-term\u00a0project to evaluate the performance of Rockfish Conservation Areas (RCAs) after 10 years of implementation. The results of that study were <a href=\"http:\/\/calcofi.org\/publications\/calcofireports\/v56\/Vol56-Marks.web.119-132.pdf\">published in CalCOFI<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan defended his thesis in the spring of 2016 and worked as a technician for the Fisheries and Conservation Biology Lab from 2016-2020. He participated in CCFRP and the <a href=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/fisheries\/benthic-observation-survey-system-boss\/\">development of new video lander<\/a> tools to improve fisheries management of Pacific rocky reefs. He has since accepted a job with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfw.state.or.us\/\">Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/oregonmarinereserves.com\/\">Marine Reserve Research Team<\/a> in Newport Oregon.
