Conservation Biology Lab<\/a>\u00a0in May 2008. \u00a0She participated as science crew for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.mlml.calstate.edu\/research\/ccfrp\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">California Collaborative Fisheries Research Program<\/a>\u00a0(CCFRP) each summer, serving as field coordinator in 2010 and 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Katie obtained a B.S. from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.humboldt.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Humboldt State University<\/a>\u00a0in 2007.\u00a0 Before attending\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Moss Landing Marine Laboratories<\/a>, she participated in numerous internships and temporary positions, including a summer at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/marine.rutgers.edu\/rumfs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rutgers University Marine Field Station<\/a>\u00a0studying burrowing anemones, participating in a wide-spread shore-based survey of gray whales, Stellar sea lions and assisting in acoustic telemetry studies involving harbor seals for three semesters at HSU.\u00a0 Katie has also conducted surveys for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ca-sgep.ucsd.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CA Sea Grant Extension Program<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.piscoweb.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oregon State University - Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans<\/a>\u00a0(PISCO).\u00a0 Lastly, she held a brief internship at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mote.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mote Marine Lab<\/a>\u00a0in Florida, quality controlling data for past artificial reef surveys and volunteering at their injured sea turtle rehabilitation hospital.\u00a0 Generally, Katie is interested in providing the data required to make informed decisions regarding use of fishery resources.<\/p>\n<p>Katie defended her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/fisheries\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2017\/09\/Schmidt_2014_Thesis.pdf\">thesis<\/a> in May 2014.\u00a0\u00a0 Her research provided current estimates of life history (growth, age at maturity, length at maturity, and fecundity) for Blue Rockfish,\u00a0<i>Sebastes mystinus,<\/i>\u00a0and Deacon Rockfish,\u00a0<i>Sebastes diaconus<\/i>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/spo.nmfs.noaa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/frable_0.pdf\">Frable 2015<\/a>).\u00a0 The value differences found between the two species' traits were slight.\u00a0 When she compared life history traits from both species combined to historical life history estimates, she found large and significant differences.\u00a0 The 2010s female fish grow to smaller maximum sizes than they did in the 1980s, 2010s female mature at much smaller sizes than they did in the 1960s, and 2010s female fish mature 1-2 years earlier than they did in the 1980s.\u00a0 However, the total fecundity of females in relation to their length remained the same between 1960s and 2010s fish.\u00a0 (Please note the current life history trait values were estimated from a combination of Blue and Deacon Rockfish samples since the past estimates from the 1960s and 1980s treated them as one species, and there is no way to separate this information currently). \u00a0 The observed shift in the life history values is probably the population's response to the overfishing of these species that occurred in the 1980s to the early 1990s.\u00a0 These new life history values will be used in the next Blue Rockfish\/ Deacon Rockfish stock assessment.<\/p>\n<p>After Moss Landing, Katie volunteered at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/swfsc.noaa.gov\/\">NMFS Southwest Fisheries Science Center<\/a>\u00a0with Dr. Munch's research group, which focuses on trans-generational plasticity of life history traits in Sheepshead Minnow.\u00a0 She also assisted with a historical catch reconstruction of Rockfishes in Puget Sound, WA.\u00a0In 2016 she began working at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.westcoast.fisheries.noaa.gov\/about_us\/california_central_valley_area_office.html\">NOAA Fisheries West Coast Region in the Central Valley office<\/a>\u00a0in Sacramento.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2307\" src=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/fisheries\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2017\/09\/Schmidt_2011.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/fisheries\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2017\/09\/Schmidt_2011.jpg 720w, https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/fisheries\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2017\/09\/Schmidt_2011-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Katherine T.
