April served as a research technician in the Environmental Biotechnology Lab at Moss Landing Marine Labs. Her background was in molecular biology and she continued her studies here at MLML to earn a Msc in Biological Oceanography. Her role in the lab was to study aspects of Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) forming organisms, namely the HAB forming diatom, Pseudo-nitzschia. She used genomic tools, including genetic transformation and manipulation, to elucidate the biosynthetic pathway of Domoic Acid (DA), the neurotoxin produced by some members of the Pseudo-nitzschia genus. In January 2019, April moved on to pursue a career in the local water quality community – we miss her dearly!
