Our work combines field studies, oceanographic cruises and the development of autonomous, miniaturized chemical analyzers to improve the spatial and temporal resolution of chemical measurements in the marine environment. In collaboration with MLML\u2019s Aquaculture facility, we also investigate the environmental impacts of seaweed aquaculture with a focus on nutrient uptake and the emission of volatile brominated gases to the atmosphere.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our research interests:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Trace metal and nutrient cycling and implications for marine productivity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Development of autonomous miniaturized chemical analyzers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ocean observatories instrumentation for essential biogeochemical parameters<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Seaweed aquaculture as a means to mitigate nutrient pollution<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Production rates of short-lived brominated gases from macroalgae<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Passive nutrient removal technologies\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sources, transport and fate of microplastics in local waterways and the Monterey Bay<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Overview of our Research The Chemical Oceanography Lab main focus revolves around the geochemical, physical and biological processes that regulate the distribution of trace metals and nutrients in estuarine, coastal and open-ocean environments.
