Our stranding network is run by graduate students and interns of the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories <a href=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/birdmam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vertebrate Ecology Lab<\/a> in partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/national\/marine-life-distress\/marine-mammal-health-and-stranding-response-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NOAA Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Our goal is to examine marine mammals and sea turtles to document life history information, investigate the cause of death, collect tissues for analysis, and recover specimens for anatomical and systematic investigations. We also assess every stranded animal for signs of human interaction such as gunshot wounds, ship strike injuries, or entanglement in marine debris. Now what?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>If you find a sick, injured, distressed, or dead marine mammal or sea turtle please <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>do not touch, pick up, or attempt to rescue the animal<\/strong><\/span>. Both live and dead stranded animals can carry zoonotic diseases and untrained responders can easily be injured by these wild animals. The most important thing you can do is to call the stranding network that covers your location (complete list available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>) and provide as much information as possible so they can coordinate an appropriate response.<\/p>\n<p>When reporting a stranded animal to the MLML Stranding Network or any of our partner organizations, please have the following info available:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Animal description<\/strong><\/span>: species, size, etc.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Location<\/strong><\/span>: please be as specific as possible (nearby landmarks, businesses, or street intersections are ideal)<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Your contact info<\/strong><\/span>: so we can follow up with you if we have any additional questions<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Photos<\/span>:\u00a0<\/strong>if you can please take a few photos of the animal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-2231-3\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-2231-3-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-2231-3-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"5\" ><div class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-2231-3-0-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h3 class=\"widget-title\">California Stranding Network Partners<\/h3>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>While the MLML Stranding Network responds to only dead pinnipeds, cetaceans, and sea turtles in Monterey County, we collaborate with a number of other stranding networks that respond to both live and dead stranded animals in our surrounding counties. This act prohibits harassment, feeding, hunting and\/or killing of all marine mammals in US waters including pinnipeds, cetaceans, sirenians, sea otters, and polar bears.
