{"id":2085,"date":"2021-02-10T12:29:10","date_gmt":"2021-02-10T20:29:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/aquaculture\/?p=2085"},"modified":"2021-02-10T12:29:10","modified_gmt":"2021-02-10T20:29:10","slug":"sjsu-mlml-aquaculture-researchers-help-restore-native-olympia-oysters-to-elkhorn-slough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/aquaculture\/2021\/02\/10\/sjsu-mlml-aquaculture-researchers-help-restore-native-olympia-oysters-to-elkhorn-slough\/","title":{"rendered":"SJSU\/MLML aquaculture researchers help restore native Olympia oysters to Elkhorn Slough"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"pl-2085\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-2085-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-2085-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-2085-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p class=\"p1\">The first effort to use aquaculture to restore native Olympia oysters in California has proven a success thanks to a team of researchers from San Jose State University\/MLML, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elkhornslough.org\/esnerr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/caseagrant.ucsd.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">California Sea Grant<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Once so abundant that they could be harvested by the tens of thousands in just a few days, the population of oysters in Elkhorn Slough had plummeted to fewer than 1,000 individuals by 2018. In response to this decline, researchers raised thousands of oysters at the <a href=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/aquaculture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MLML Aquaculture Facility<\/a> which were then outplanted in Elkhorn Slough. Two years of monitoring have shown that this effort successfully doubled the Olympia oyster population!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">SJSU\/MLML Research Faculty Member <a href=\"https:\/\/mlml.sjsu.edu\/people\/research-faculty\/luke-gardner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Luke Gardner<\/a> reviews the success of this exciting project and the importance on conservation aquaculture in this <a href=\"https:\/\/caseagrant.ucsd.edu\/news\/aquaculture-shows-promise-in-restoring-native-california-oysters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">California Sea Grant story<\/a>.
